A disturbing incident unfolded on Sunday at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano when Kano Pillars FC fans stormed the pitch, attacking the referee and Shooting Stars players.
The match, which ended 1-1, was marred by unacceptable scenes that led to the deployment of tear gas to restore order.
The fans’ behaviour has raised concerns about safety and security at the stadium.
Persecondnews reports that this is not the first time Kano Pillars FC has been involved in such an incident.
In 2019, the team was fined about ₦36 million due to their fans’ conduct.
The fines include ₦2 million in October 2024, ₦12 million in January 2024, ₦1 million in October 2023, ₦2.25 million in June 2022, ₦9 million in April 2022, ₦2.5 million in March 2022, and ₦8 million in June 2019.
These repeated offences have sparked questions about the team’s ability to manage its fans’ behaviour.
Kano Pillars FC has a history of fan violence, with incidents dating back to 2019.
In one notable incident, the team’s chairman was expelled from the league for assaulting a match official.
The team’s home stadium was also banned from hosting NPFL matches due to fan violence.
