President Bola Tinubu has advocated global collaboration in addressing climate change, saying “no single nation can walk the road to sustainability alone”.
Speaking at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to clean and renewable energy.
“Our efforts are anchored on three pillars: Energy Transition, Climate Resilience, and Sustainable Development.
“We recognize the importance of reducing carbon emissions and a just transition to clean and renewable energy, promoting environmental sustainability and economic growth,” the president said.
As Africa’s most populous nation and one of its largest economies, Tinubu said Nigeria has a significant role to play in addressing climate change.
President Tinubu said he has unveiled plans to tackle climate change, emphasizing the need for a collective approach to achieve sustainability.
He announced that his administration has developed concrete programmes aimed at reducing carbon emissions, primarily through diversifying energy sources, minimizing reliance on fossil fuels, and promoting eco-friendly practices that foster economic growth.
To drive Nigeria’s transition to a green economy, Tinubu highlighted several key initiatives including the introduction of the National Clean Cooking Policy, designed to provide cleaner energy alternatives for cooking.
Additionally, the government is investing in infrastructure to support the widespread adoption of Compressed Natural Gas and electric vehicles, paving the way for a more sustainable transportation sector.
According to him, Nigeria is also working to harness the potential of solid minerals to support the green energy transition.
“To promote a Green Economy in Africa, we must focus on integrating sustainable practices in all sectors of our economy.
“These investments are capital intensive and require international support from partner countries, including multinational organizations, development partners, and individuals who share our vision of a sustainable, prosperous, and equitable future,” Tinubu stressed.
“The fight against climate change is not merely an environmental necessity but a global economic opportunity to reshape the trajectory of our continent and the global energy landscape,” he added.
