Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi’s arrest, staff members’ assault, blatant abuse of power – Mr. Macaroni

The continued detention of human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has sparked widespread outrage, with actor and skitmaker Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr. Macaroni, adding his voice to the growing criticism.

The comedian took to social media to denounce what he described as blatant abuse of power and a reflection of the systemic issues in Nigeria’s justice system.

Citing Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, Mr. Macaroni drew attention to the irony of the current events mirroring the problems the book seeks to address.

“The brazen impunity Dele Farotimi’s book discusses is playing out right before our eyes,” he lamented.

He criticized the police’s actions, highlighting the alleged abduction of Farotimi from one state to another, harassment of his staff, and the unlawful seizure of their phones.

“How many crimes have been committed here while trying to investigate whether Mr. Farotimi actually committed a crime?” he questioned.

The comedian did not hold back in calling out the Nigerian police for allowing themselves to be used as tools for oppression.

“For how long will the Nigeria police continue to be used by the ‘High and Mighty’ to oppress Nigerians?” he asked, urging the force to rethink its role in perpetuating such injustices.

Mr. Macaroni also pointed out the troubling trend of turning civil matters into criminal cases due to political differences or loyalty to powerful figures.

He warned of the dangers this poses to ordinary citizens, saying, “We have opened the season for the rich and influential to have anyone arrested by the police, even for something as trivial as criticizing them.”

He expressed concern over the lack of accountability among those in power, noting that even individuals who should understand the principles of justice abuse their authority.

“Our system of corruption allows the innocent man to suffer while the guilty roam freely, committing numerous crimes under the guise of seeking justice,” he said.

The detention of Dele Farotimi has raised questions about the state of justice and the protection of fundamental rights in Nigeria.

Many activists and public figures have joined the conversation, calling for his immediate release and an end to what they describe as the weaponization of law enforcement against dissent.

The incident has reignited debates on police reform, with critics arguing that such cases expose deep-seated flaws in the justice system.

For now, the public awaits further developments, but the calls for accountability and systemic change grow louder by the day.
