Guilt-racked goat thief, David Jonah, a teenage student, was lucky to have enjoyed rare leniency and mercy from the temple of justice at his sentencing by a Kaduna court.

Pleading guilty to stealing a he-goat, Jonah had profusely and repentantly begged the court for leniency.

After a review of his case, a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court sentenced the defendant to 30 days of imprisonment.

Persecondnews reports that Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, who handed down the sentence, however, gave the convict an option of a N10,000 fine with a warning to desist from committing crime.

Emmanuel further advised the convict to focus on his studies or learn a trade, warning that the court will not be lenient with him next time he commits such a crime.

Police prosecution had charged Jonah with a two-count offence of trespass and stealing.

Insp. Chidi Leo had told the court that one Samson John reported the incident at the police station on Nov. 29.

According to Leo, the defendant went into the complainant’s compound while he was away on his farm and stole his he-goat valued at N65,000.

The defendant was caught by a neighbour while he was coming out of the compound with the goat, he said.

The offences contravened the provisions of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
