NPFL match between Enyimba-Katsina United abandoned due to floodlight failure

1.1k

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash between Enyimba and Katsina United was abruptly called off on Sunday after the floodlights at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba failed.

With Enyimba leading 3-0 in the 75th minute, the game was unable to continue as the generator powering the facility shut down, plunging the stadium into darkness.

Fans were left stranded, relying on phone torchlights to navigate their way out of the stadium.

The disappointing turn of events sparked widespread frustration among supporters, who took to social media to express their discontent.

Enyimba FC issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience, attributing the disruption to “unforeseen technical difficulties.”

The statement announced that the match would resume the following day at 8:00 am, as agreed upon by both teams and match officials.

However, fans were unimpressed by the explanation, with many calling for greater accountability.

@Prosper, a fan who wrote on X after the match, said: “Which unforeseen technical difficulties are you talking about? Let’s be specific—the engine gas finished… Nigeria Premier League should do better.”

Santo Nwosu echoed similar sentiments, writing, “It was so embarrassing to witness the disgrace today, and the match was live on air. I’m so disappointed with the entire management of Enyimba FC. You guys really failed us today.”

The incident has raised concerns about the state of infrastructure in Nigerian stadiums, as well as the need for improved maintenance and investment to prevent such disruptions in the future.
