Dembélé, Messi Headline Star-Studded 2026 Ballon d’Or Shortlist

The battle for football’s ultimate individual prize has officially begun. France Football released the 30-player shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or on Tuesday, featuring titleholder Ousmane Dembélé alongside eight-time winner Lionel Messi.

High-profile stars chasing the golden trophy include Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, Vinícius Júnior, Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Lamine Yamal, and Achraf Hakimi.

Voters will weigh club silverware, personal brilliance and season-long consistency from the 2025/26 campaign when they pick the world’s best player.

Those 30 names capture the standout performers of last season and set up a tight contest before the London night.

The winner will be crowned at a ceremony in London on October 26, when football’s biggest individual honour is handed out.

How 2026 Ballon d’Or Votes Work; Individual Brilliance First.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or is not a trophy tally. France Football ranks three tests in strict order, and individual brilliance sits above silverware as journalists begin voting after Tuesday’s 30-man shortlist.

First comes personal output: decisive moments, match-winning impact and the ability to dazzle across the season. Voters must judge who changed games, not who simply collected medals.

Second is team success. Club and international honours still count, but they rank behind a player’s own influence. A World Cup or Champions League title does not automatically seal the prize.

Third is class and fair play. Conduct on and off the pitch can tilt a tight race, though it remains the lowest of the three official tests.

One specialist journalist from each of FIFA’s top 100 ranked nations will list a personal top 10 from the 30 nominees. First place is worth 15 points, then 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1.

The player with the most points wins. If two finish level, the most first-place votes break the tie. Career history no longer counts; only the 2025/26 season does.

That window runs from August 2025 through July 2026 and includes the World Cup.

Ballots stay private until after the London ceremony on October 26, when France Football publishes every ranking.
