The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) journalist, Daniel Ojukwu, who had been detained since May 1 following an alleged “abduction” by some police officers in Lagos State, has been released.
FIJ announced his freedom on their website on Friday, May 10.
The Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Inspector General of Police initially took Ojukwu to the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) in Abuja for a suspected violation of the 2015 Cybercrime Act before transferring him to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID).
Ojukwu’s family and FIJ management were unaware of his whereabouts until 48 hours after he went missing.
Persecondnews recalls that some civil society organizations had protested at the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday to demand his release.
The Spaces for Change (S4C) also demanded his immediate release, arguing that the law forbids police from detaining suspects for more than 24 hours without charging them to court.
