The University of Jos, Plateau State, has been hit by students’ protest following a 100 percent increase in school fees by the institution.

The students had on Tuesday morning staged a peaceful protest to express their displeasure over the hike in school fees.

Persecondnews gathered that the university shot up the fees by over 100 percent from N45,000 to more than N105,000 depending on faculty.

A 300-level student in the school, who spoke to our reporter, said she had previously paid N45,000 but with the new increment she is expected to pay N105,000 and for students offering GST courses it is N110,000.

Lucy, a student of Faculty of Social Sciences said: “We just resumed, and they are increasing school fees. I usually pay N45,000 but now I am paying N105,000, despite the hardship in the country.

“The school fees for science students are different from ours they are to pay N140,000 majorly because they are using the laboratory.”

The student union leaders of the institution had mobilized students to hit the streets, calling for an immediate reversal of the hike in school fees and other services rendered by the university.

Students armed were with placards with different inscriptions such as “in the hostel no light, no water, no renovation why increase school fees”‘etc.

Last week, a similar protest had erupted at the University of Lagos over about 400 percent fee increase with returning students expected to pay N100,000 and N190,000 depending on courses of study per session with medical and dentistry students paying the highest.
