Presidential Election Tribunal strikes out APM’s suit seeking Shettima’s disqualification

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has reeled out the first set of judgments, throwing out a suit brought before it by the Allied People’s Movement (APM), seeking the disqualification of Vice-President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the February 25 poll.

According to APM, Tinubu was improperly sponsored by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for nominating Shettima as vice-presidential candidate for the election.

APM had averred that Shettima was still the APC candidate for Borno Central Senatorial District on July 14 when he accepted the nomination as running mate.

Ruling on the case on Wednesday, the Tribunal said it is a pre-election matter, adding that it lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the case.

“APM lacked locus standi to institute matters bothering on nomination and sponsorship of Shettima as vice-presidential candidate in another party,” the five-member tribunal, all justices of Appeal Courts across the country ruled.
