With 26 days to go, Senate approves retroactively Buhari’s N22.7trn extra-budgetary expenditure

The Senate has approved the request of President Muhammadu Buhari for the sum of N22.7 trillion spent by the executive arm without the initial approval of the National Assembly.

Persecondnews reports that the N22.7 trillion approved funds borrowed by the Federal Government from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through the “ways and means advances”, have been the subject of dispute between members of the Red Chambers, especially the opposition lawmakers — the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) senators, who kicked against it.

The opposition lawmakers demanded that records of what the funds were spent on be provided before approval is given to the President’s request.

Following the uproar the request caused in the Senate, Senate President Ahmad Lawan appointed Gobir to chair an Ad- hoc Committee and liaise with relevant ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) on the spendings.

However, following the Senator Gobir-led ad-hoc committee report presented before the lawmakers, the upper legislative chamber approved the request on Wednesday during plenary.
