Why Prof. Mahmood Yakubu is trending on social media platforms

The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commision (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has become a subject of discussion on social media platforms following the release of a song by popular Nigerian rappers- Vector and Falz, knocking Yakubu for alleged electoral malpractice.

The singers on the new song represent frustrated Nigerians, and didn’t hold back on calling out INEC, its chairman and other political parties allegedly involved in the electoral malpractices among other atrocities that marred the 2023 elections.

Falz has been a critic of the current government led by President Muhammadu Buhari for some of its policies which didn’t go down well with Nigerians, particularly the ENDSARS saga that appeared to be the last straw that broke the camel’s back.

‘Yabuku‘ serves as Falz’s second single for 2023 and is a follow-up to the previously released ‘Owa‘ featuring Tekno. Falz and Vector joined forces to draw attention to INEC chairman’s alleged involvement in sabotaging the will of the people and forcing unpopular candidate on Nigerians.

On the new single, ‘Yakubu’, Falz and Vector represent frustrated Nigerians who have been constantly oppressed, and denied their constitutional right to vote.

With lyrics such as: “Mr Yakubu! Ę ma ń se bi fraudster, you don’t want to prosper, come and collect, oscar 300 billion te gbà lówó ìjoba, kí le fi se ná sir,” Falz didn’t hold back, the rapper calls out the INEC Chairman, and corrupt political parties allegedly involved in the electoral malpractices.

Vector said that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kayode Ariwoola would go down in history as the judge in whose hands the law died, highlighting the judge’s untoward relationship with politicians.

“Who killed the law, who will people ask,” Vector asked rhetorically as the camera pointed towards the judge.

Highlighting the possible financial inducements of judicial officers, Falz said the judiciary might have been bribed to affirm Tinubu’s widely disputed electoral victory.

“Thank you my lord, I respect you my lord… since he has paid, you have hurriedly written it [the judgement] and you said he has been elected, they should bring the crown,” he said.
