Alleged certificate forgery: Prosecute Tinubu now, coalition tells IGP

Reactions have continued to trail the credentials of presidential candidates as published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday with a coalition of civic society groups calling for a probe of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over alleged forgery.

The Center For Reform and Public Advocacy (CfRPA) called on the Inspector General of Police to immediately arrest Tinubu for alleged forgery rising from its one-day meeting in Abuja.

Briefing newsmen on the petition written to the Inspector General of Police, the Legal Adviser of the CFRPA, Kalu Kalu Agu, said the IGP should be curious to investigate the claim by the presidential candidate of APC  that he completed his primary and  secondary schools the same year.

The group raised issues with the. Form EC9 submitted to INEC by Tinubu where he claimed to have “completed his primary and secondary schools in the year 0000”.

“This is unheard of that a student will complete both primary and secondary schools the same year. We attached a photocopy of the INEC  form EC9 as completed and signed by Ahmed Tinubu to the IGP,” Agu said.

Making reference to previous report on alleged forgery case against Ahmed Tinubu, the Right group also attached a certified  true copy of a report from ad-hoc committee set up by the Lagos State House of Assembly in 1999 to the its petition to the Police Chief.

He said the investigations by the House of Assembly was instituted following petitions written by one Alhaji Jameel Seriki purportedly of No. 62, Bologun Street, West, Lagos and one Dr. Waliu Balogun- Smith Purportedly of No. 5, Unity Road, Ikeja, Lagos accusing Senator Ahmed Tinubu of perjury, certificate forgery and false information (lying under oath)”.

Agu said the Ad-hoc committee actually sat and completed its assignment and reported that the then governor of Lagos State, “Ahmed Tinubu owed up and claimed responsibility for many errors discovered in the forms he submitted  then before INEC, adding that Tinubu escaped prosecution on the ground of the immunity clause as enshrined in Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution”.

Agu, in the said report from the Lagos State House Assembly, the late legal icon and human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, whose legal opinion was sought by the ad-hoc committee said:”Crime has been committed by the governor since the provisions of Section 192 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 32, Laws of Lagos State, 1994 has been breached.

“Governor Bola Tinubu volunteered false information on oath to enable him contest for the post of the governor of Lagos State.”

The Legal Adviser of the Right body also said: “lt is against this backdrop and the recent document Senator Tinubu submitted before the electoral commission, we are calling on the Inspection General of police to investigate him.

” If he was able to escape impeachment then as serving governor, he is now a private citizen and the police have no excuse because Ahmed Tinubu is not above the law.

“If the IGP cannot investigate him and prosecute him, the police should stop arresting other Nigerians who may have committed similar offence.”

“If they failed to invite him for investigations, we will go to court to compel the police to do their job. We know that the year 0000 never existed.”
