No fewer than 286 foreign nationals of the 600 who have applied for Nigerian citizenships, have been granted by the Federal Government.
The Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, who disclosed this at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, said 208 of those approved were granted citizenship by naturalization.
He further disclosed that 78 others were granted citizenship by registration, adding that the persons approved cut across various countries of the world.
On his part, the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, described the development as groundbreaking, especially at a time some Nigerians had claimed that the country is difficult to live in.
“It’s a groundbreaking memo as it will tell you just as some people think Nigeria is not a fit and proper place to live in.
“We have thousands of people who are applying daily all over the world from virtually every continent to be citizens of Nigeria, I think that is very instructive,” he said.
Persecondnews recalls that in 2017, the Nigerian government granted 335 foreign nationals citizenships.
