All is set to change the retirement age of teachers in public schools in the country from 60 years to 65 as the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers Bill 2021.

The Executive Bill is to be sent to the National Assembly for consideration.

The meeting, the first in 2021, was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, told State House correspondents at the end of the meeting that highlights of the bill include the introduction of bursary award, special rural posting allowances and other measures to attract the best hands to the profession.

He said apart from the retirement age of teachers which will be increased to 65 years, the years of service will also be increased from 35 to 40 years.

The bill also seeks to give legal backing to the measures to enhance the teaching profession.
