Ogun monarch hauled before court over right to stool, indigeneship

The installation of Oba Joshua Aminu Amusa, the Olu of Idanyin in Agbara area of Ado-odo/Ota Local Government of Ogun State has been challenged at an Ota High Court.

The plaintiffs are some indigenes of the town, who are challenging the eligibility and qualification of the traditional ruler.

In a suit no. HCT/517/2020, the plaintiffs want the court to disqualify Oba Amusa who they claimed was “imposed” as “Oba of Idanyin” over the good and law-abiding indigenes of Idanyin.

According to the statement of claims, the 1st claimant/plaintiff is the current Regent of Idanyin Community since 2009 and has been presiding over the affairs of the community pending the appointment of a substantive ruler.

The claimants further averred that the grounds of their refusal and rejection of the 1st defendant’s candidacy as the Oba of Idanyin was premised on the following — he is not an indigene of Idanyin Community; he does not belong to any Ruling House in Idanyin; he is a complete stranger to Idanyin Chieftaincy stool.

They also averred that “the descendants of Oyela who was the progenitor and founder of Idanyin are divided into four ruling houses — Ashade Ogbo, Obanla Amuni, Okedeyi, and Idah and that Oba Aminu Amusa does not belong to any of the four ruling houses.

In his response, Oba Amusa insisted that he is qualified to be installed as the monarch of Idanyin.

“I am not a stranger in Idanyin as averred by the claimants in the case. Some of the claimants in this case signed letter for my nomination at the local government.

“However, as the case is in court, let us wait and see the outcome,” he said.

Persecondnews reports that hearing in the case has been fixed for February 4, 2021.
