Horror: Retired lecturer shoots varsity lecturer-wife in the eyes, takes own life

A depression-racked former lecturer with Kaduna State Polytechnic, Austin Umera, has pulled the trigger and shot his lecturer wife, Dr Maurin Umera, in the eyes before shooting himself dead right in their home.

A domestic quarrel at their residence on Kigo road, Kaduna, almost claimed the life of the woman, lectures at the Department of Languages in Kaduna State University (KASU) as she was taken to the 44 Army Reference Hospital Accident and Emergency Unit.

Austin, who lectured at the Department of Languages of the polytechnic before his retirement, had engaged his wife in a hot argument and threatened to shoot her if she dare raise her voice.

Their son told newsmen: “It was like a joke. When my father said he would shoot my mom, she couldn’t believe it.

“And all of a sudden, I heard a gunshot. I ran to my mom to take her to a nearby hospital when I heard the second shot. This time, it was my father that shot himself on the head. He died instantly.”

A neighbour also gave an account of the fatal shooting, saying “we heard gunshots from the house and we quickly called the emergency number. Immediately, the policemen arrived at the residence.”

The timely arrival of the police, who took the injured wife to the hospital saved her life and deposited the body of the husband at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital mortuary.

Contacted, Police spokesman, ASP Mohammed Jalige, said investigation into the incident had commenced, adding that a locally-made pistol was recovered from the scene.
