What do the youths of Nigeria want the most these days? It is WiFi or Wireless Fidelity. It is a wireless network, through which multiple devices can connect to the Internet. Such a system is also called a WiFi hotspot that can be used by any device within around 20 metres of the router.

In an age when the country is racing towards going digital and getting acknowledged as one of the leading country in technology, WiFi comes as one of the key driving factors.

The Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo Thursday launched the free wifi zones in the popular Wuse 2 market in Abuja.

” It’s a very exciting day for me, VP Osinbajo says as he commissions Free Wifi in Wuse market, a fallout of his visit to Silicon Valley, US, where he got Google to promise free wifi for Nigerian markets and other public places including airports, said Laolu Akande, his spokesperson.

According to Mr Akande the free wifi zones would be extended to 200 other places next year.

Public Wi-Fi access can have a huge impact on tourism, too. When traveling, indeed, people want to stay in contact with their family and friends, share their holiday pictures on their social networks and check travel information, said Bidemi Sanni, an Info Tech specialist.

” As a consequence, tourists are more incentivized to travel to a location if they can use the internet for free. Providing a city with free Wi-Fi hotspots would be advantageous both for tourists, who would enjoy internet connection without roaming charges, and for the local economy, which would largely benefit from increased levels of tourism, she told Per Second News.

Ms Sanni also warned about the dangers of free public wifi, ” It creates an amazing opportunity for  hackers to get unfettered access to unsecured devices on the same network and cause harm by stealing personal information.

Hackers can also use an unsecured Wi-Fi connection to distribute malware, she said.
