NDC Clears Path for Peter Obi with Southern Presidential Ticket Zoning

79

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, a strategic move widely expected to favour recent defector and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The announcement was made Saturday at the party’s ongoing national convention in Abuja and subsequently confirmed via the NDC’s official X account, which declared: “NDC Presidential ticket is zoned to the South!!”
The convention, which features high-profile attendees like Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, is centered on a comprehensive agenda.
Beyond zoning, delegates are expected to ratify an amended party constitution and elect new national executives.
This pivotal gathering comes as the NDC experiences a surge in membership, absorbing a wave of defectors from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Persecondnews had reported that on Tuesday, May 5, 17 members of the House of Representatives defected from the ADC to the NDC during plenary.
The lawmakers include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande and Munachim Umezuruike.
Others are Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, Murphy Omoruyi and Abdulhakeem Ado.
The defections came two days after Obi and Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC from the ADC.
Following a high-stakes, closed-door session with party leadership, Peter Obi and former NNPP presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso officially received their NDC membership cards this past Sunday.
The two political heavyweights were formally welcomed into the fold by the NDC’s national leader and former Bayelsa Governor, Seriake Dickson.
For Obi, this move marks his second major transition in six months.
He attributed his departure from the ADC—which he had only joined in December 2025 after leaving the Labour Party—to a toxic cocktail of internal instability, external meddling, and growing hostility from within the party’s leadership.
