The Nigeria Para-Powerlifting Federation has finalized plans for the Kingsley Iwodi Para-Powerlifting Open Championship.
Hosted at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium’s Indoor Sports Hall (Package B) in Abuja, the event will showcase the nation’s top talent from April 30 to May 4, 2026.

Persecondnews reports that athletes and officials will begin arriving on April 30 with the main competitions running from 1st to 3rd May and departures scheduled for 4th May.

The event is projected to showcase Nigeria’s continued global supremacy in the sport while serving as a key platform for spotting fresh talent, sharpening skills, and preparing competitors for future international assignments.

Among the headline names expected to compete are world champions and decorated athletes Folashade Oluwafemiayo, Esther Oyema, Riluwan Idris and Ogundolie Tolulope.

Folashade Oluwafemiayo, the reigning world champion in the +86kg category, remains the benchmark in the discipline and was recently appointed to the Athletes’ Representative Forum of the World Para Powerlifting Organisation (WPPO) in recognition of her outstanding performance and leadership.

Esther Oyema, hailing from Edo State, stands out as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished para-athletes.

The 55kg world champion successfully defended her title at the 2025 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Cairo, Egypt.

Born on 20th April 1982, Oyema entered the sport in 2000 and immediately stamped her authority by setting an African record in her debut competition.

She has since amassed multiple gold medals at the Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games and other major tournaments, including three Commonwealth titles with notable success in the 50kg class.
