A talented young Ghanaian Premier League footballer has died after armed robbers ambushed his club’s bus as the team returned from an away match on Sunday, officials confirmed on Monday.

Dominic Frimpong, who played for Berekum Chelsea, was among those caught in the violent roadside attack that left the squad scrambling for safety in the darkness.

In a statement, Berekum Chelsea FC said “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” fired on the team bus and forced the players to take cover in the bushes.

Ghana police reported the incident happened at about 10:30 pm local time (2230 GMT) along the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in Nyinahin District in the southern part of the Ashanti Region.

Frimpong suffered gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.

Officers added that another victim, 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of 4,500 cedis ($408) during the same attack.

The Ghana Football Association described the incident as “tragic” and a “huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole.”

In its statement the association paid tribute to the player, saying “Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league.”

The 20-year-old forward had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana Stars FC earlier this year.

He featured in 13 matches and scored two goals for the club, according to local media reports.
