President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dalhatu Abubakar as Chairman of the Nigeria Commodity Exchange (NCX), alongside a newly constituted governing board.
Effective immediately, this leadership transition is a key component of the federal government’s strategy to strengthen commodity trading and boost non-oil export growth.
The board’s restructuring aligns with the “Renewed Hope” agenda, focusing on enhancing food security, optimizing market efficiency, and widening access to international markets.
“The appointments form part of continuous initiatives aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s commodity trading framework, boosting price discovery mechanisms, increasing market transparency, and promoting the growth of non-oil exports,” a Presidency statement issued on Thursday disclosed. The incoming board includes non-executive directors Najah Muhammed, Bamidele Hussein, Mezuo Nwuneli, Obi Igwe and Foluso Ayo-Olaiya, with Anthony Atuche named as managing director.

“The reconstituted NCX board is set to deliver the essential strategic guidance needed to make the exchange fully operational while drawing in vital investments for warehousing, logistics, and broader trade infrastructure. It will also strengthen accountability across the board.”

Officials described the NCX as a cornerstone institution for delivering the government’s twin goals of food security and export diversification.

“By establishing structured commodity markets and encouraging greater private sector involvement, the NCX will help formalise trade in commodities, enhance traceability, stabilise market conditions, and better position Nigeria within both regional and international value chains,” the Presidency added.

Abubakar, a seasoned businessman from Kano State, serves as chairman of Al-Hamsad Integrated Rice Mills and currently holds the position of president of the Conference of Northern States Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (CONSCCIMA).
