Acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has officially assumed duty following his decoration earlier on Wednesday by President Bola Tinubu.

His assumption of office follows the resignation of former Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down on Tuesday, citing family reasons.

Following his decoration at the Presidential Villa, Acting IGP Tunji Disu proceeded immediately to the Force Headquarters.

Arriving at approximately 4:25 p.m., he received his inaugural salute from the Quarter Guards and assembled officers before participating in a formal handover ceremony witnessed by the police high command.

Speaking earlier to State House correspondents, Disu signaled a new era for the police, declaring an end to impunity.

He pledged to prioritize strict professionalism and institutional accountability throughout his tenure.

“I will let them know that the era of impunity is over. I will ensure that I train them and encourage them to follow human rights… and follow a regime of zero tolerance to corruption,” he said.

He stressed that citizens not political actors remain the ultimate authority the police must serve.

“One of the first lectures I’m going to have with my men… is to let them know that the citizen of the country is the boss,” he said, adding that public cooperation is essential for effective policing.

Disu also pledged to prioritise officers and men’s welfare and morale, saying motivated personnel perform better in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, including banditry and insurgency.

Egbetokun, who attended the ceremony, expressed strong confidence in Disu’s leadership, describing him as a trusted colleague and experienced officer.

“I invested in likely successors in the Nigerian Police Force, and I’m happy that one of those that I’ve invested in has been found most suitable for the job,” he said, urging Disu to continue reforms in intelligence-led policing and inter-agency collaboration.
