Civil society groups and citizens staged a peaceful protest in Abuja, demanding that Nigeria’s Electoral Act be amended to mandate real-time electronic upload of election results.
Led by the “Enough is Enough” movement and backed by Labour Party’s Peter Obi, protesters said transparent result transmission is critical to restoring trust in Nigeria’s democracy and ending electoral manipulation.
Obi warned that Nigeria’s democratic system risks collapse without credible elections, urging leaders to “do the right thing” and set an example for Africa.
Entertainer Peter Ogbudu (Ghana Must Go) and activist Isaac Fayose also addressed the crowd, criticizing the Senate’s removal of the live upload provision from the proposed reform bill and rejecting claims that poor network coverage makes electronic transmission impossible.
The protest followed the Senate’s passage of an amended Electoral Act that excluded mandatory real time result uploads, a move lawmakers say was driven by fears of legal disputes arising from technical failures.
