Why I Won’t Take Legal Action Against Pastor Ashimolowo for Derogatory Remarks—Shina Peters

167

Veteran Nigerian singer, Sir Shina Peters, has responded after a video of clergyman, Matthew Ashimolowo, comparing his progress in life with that of Zenith Bank Managing Director, Jim Ovia, went viral on social media.

The incident has sparked widespread discussions about success, wealth, and public statements by religious leaders.

In the video, Ashimolowo was teaching his congregation on the Biblical principles of delayed gratification.

He referenced an incident from years ago where Shina Peters reportedly had N20 million which he spent on acquiring a house.

In contrast, Ashimolowo said, Ovia invested the same amount to start a bank that has since grown into a multinational institution.

Ashimolowo, during his sermon, remarked: “The bank has now branches across many countries in the world, but one man is now fixing leaking roofs, broken toilets, and doors,” referring to Shina Peters’ current lifestyle.

The statement has been widely criticised as derogatory and dismissive.

Another veteran singer, Daddy Showkey, reacted to the video on his Instagram page, defending Shina Peters.

He criticised Ashimolowo for the comparison, saying it was unfair and disrespectful to the music icon.

Showkey’s comments reignited conversations about how public figures discuss personal success and wealth.

In response, Sir Shina Peters issued a statement on his Instastories, clarifying his position regarding the clergyman’s remarks.

“I have seen the video circulating online, and while the comments made about me are unnecessary, I will not respond with bitterness or legal action,” he said.

Peters further explained his reason for refraining from confrontation, citing his understanding of spiritual teachings.

“As a clergyman myself, I know better than to engage in verbal battles or harbor ill feelings. I believe in humility and forgiveness, even when others speak against me,” he stated.

He also addressed the comparison between his wealth and that of Jim Ovia, emphasizing that life is not solely measured by financial accumulation.

“Success is not just about money or businesses. My journey has blessed many, and that is more valuable to me than the number of bank branches one owns,” Peters added.

The singer’s measured response has been praised by fans and colleagues alike, many of whom commended him for rising above the controversy.

Social media users highlighted his choice to avoid escalation as an example of grace and maturity in the public eye.

Peters concluded his statement by emphasizing respect and the importance of focusing on one’s own path.

“I wish Reverend Ashimolowo well in his ministry. My focus remains on my music, my congregation, and the positive impact I can make in people’s lives,” he said.
