A Rivers State High Court in Oyigbo has temporarily halted the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu.
On Friday, Justice F.A. Fiberesima issued an interim injunction restraining Speaker Martin Amaewhule and the Clerk of the House from sending any impeachment-related correspondence to the state’s Chief Judge.
The seven-day order also bars Chief Judge Justice Simeon Amadi from receiving or acting upon any request from the 27 lawmakers to constitute an investigative panel.
Additionally, the court granted the Governor and his deputy permission to serve the legal papers to the lawmakers by posting them at the gate of the State Assembly quarters. Justice Fiberesima has adjourned the matter to January 23, 2026, for a hearing on the motion.
However, the House of Assembly on Friday resolved to continue with the impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy.
Also, the four lawmakers who had earlier withdrawn from the impeachment move and called on their colleagues to follow suit recanted their position on Friday, accusing the governor of being adamant.
