Nollywood actress Olayode Juliana, popularly known as Toyo Baby, has spoken out against what she describes as a growing culture of irreverence toward the Holy Spirit in trending social media content.
The actress, who rose to prominence for her role in the hit series Jenifa’s Diary, took to Instagram in a lengthy post to express her discomfort and disappointment over captions and jokes that, in her view, trivialise something sacred.
In her strongly worded message, Olayode did not hide her emotions as she addressed the viral trend head-on.
“What I don’t quite understand are some of the captions that are turning it into cruise,” she wrote.
“Seeing captions like ‘Holy Spirit no carry me because of my big nyash, because I get weight, because He no like small things’ makes me cringe. Do we know who we’re talking about here? The Holy Spirit?! Please, let’s be careful.”
She urged Christians to be more mindful of how they reference sacred figures, stressing that humor should have boundaries.
“Let’s not reduce something sacred to a joke. Please, let’s honor and revere the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not for trends or a punchline for attention. Let’s honor Him,” she stated.
While acknowledging that social media thrives on jokes and lighthearted banter, the actress explained that her concern stems from a deeper sense of responsibility as a believer.
“I know we like to joke and catch cruise online, and sometimes it’s really just vibes.
But I’ve been feeling a bit uncomfortable. We Christians take too many things with levity. People of other religions wouldn’t dare mention the name of their prophet or god without honor,” she added.
Olayode further lamented what she described as a casual attitude toward sacred names in Christian circles.
“We throw the name of Jesus around with no regard, now the Holy Spirit? No please, it’s a NO!!! NO!!! Everything can’t always be fun and games — not when it concerns Someone so precious, not when it concerns THE HOLY SPIRIT.”
She reiterated that faith and joy are not mutually exclusive, but reverence must remain intact.
“For me personally, we can make jokes, do fun things, and be joyful without being disrespectful,” she affirmed.
