Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to take steps to reinstate its Law programmes, boost student enrollment, and embrace artificial intelligence (AI) as part of a broader academic overhaul.

Speaking during a visit of the university’s new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma Orji Uduma,  to his Abeokuta residence, Obasanjo advised the authorities to restore the law faculty of the university without further delay.

Obasanjo, who was president from 1999 to 2007, emphasized that modernization and expanded educational access must remain top priorities for the institution.

In response, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi A. Peters, noted that NOUN is already making strides in digital transformation.

He highlighted that the university’s recent efforts to integrate AI into its curriculum have already garnered significant international recognition.

He disclosed that the university currently has about 300,000 registered students, with approximately 190,000 actively engaged.

According to him, the gap between registered students and active engagement reflects varying levels of participation.

He expressed confidence in the leadership of the new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma, saying he is committed to sustaining innovation and advancing institutional development.

In his remarks, Uduma pledged to prioritise the revival of the Law programme and strengthen ongoing reforms.

He also thanked Obasanjo for his continued support and contributions to the growth of the institution.

The team also visited the Abeokuta Study Centre of the university, and was received by the Centre Director, Oyekunle Adegboyega, who conducted members on a tour of the facility’s offices.
