Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced dates for the upcoming 2027 general elections, separating the polls for national and state-level positions.
According to Commission Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, who spoke during a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on February 20, 2027, while the Governorship and State Assembly elections will be held on March 6.
Amupitan said on February 4, the commission had already confirmed the completion of its election timetable and activity schedule, even amid ongoing delays in the National Assembly’s approval of the revised Electoral Act.
“We have submitted our proposals to the National Assembly,” Amupitan stated, acknowledging that some items in the schedule of activities could be impacted by the time the lawmakers pass the electoral act.
Under the previous leadership of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC had established fixed dates for Nigeria’s general elections spanning the next 40 years, a strategy aimed at reducing uncertainty among voters and preventing operational challenges for the commission and involved parties, as highlighted by Amupitan.
