The organizers of the prestigious Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, led by Nilayo Sports Management Limited, have hailed the upcoming 11th edition as a “landmark occasion.”

Scheduled for February 14, 2026, this year’s race marks the beginning of a transformative era for the Gold Label event, cementing its status as a premier road race on the African continent.

At a media briefing held on Friday at the Access Bank headquarters in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nilayo’s Managing Director, Yetunde Olopade, officially kicked off preparations.

She emphasized that the 2026 marathon is built on three core pillars: expansion, endurance, and elevated ambition.

“This 11th edition is symbolic for us. It is not just another race, it signals the beginning of another decade of excellence, impact and global recognition for the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon,” she said.

Olopade lauded the Lagos State Government, Access Bank, and other partners for their enduring support of the world-class event.

“We are deeply grateful to Access Bank, our valued sponsors and the Lagos State Government for their consistency and belief in this vision.

“Together, we have built one of the most revered road races in Africa, and this year’s event will be nothing short of world class,” she added, while pledging to participants, collaborators, and attendees that the event would deliver an exceptional experience to strengthen its worldwide reputation.

Lekan Fatodu, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, also addressed the gathering, praising the event planners for their expertise and commitment, emphasizing how the marathon has boosted Lagos’ international image over time.

He reiterated the government’s ongoing backing, viewing the race as an avenue that highlights the city favorably.

“The Lagos State Government remains fully committed to supporting the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon because it continues to put Lagos on the global map in a positive light,” Fatodu remarked

The event, he stated, serves as a tribute to local traditions and the spirit of determination, proving the state’s ability to host premier global gatherings.

He also reaffirmed that the government is ensuring all necessary conditions are met for a seamless experience.

Sharing this sentiment, International Association of Ultra Runners head Nadeem Khan commended the marathon’s evolution.

He specifically credited the coordinators and sponsors for their foresight and their ability to deliver a top-tier sporting event.

“The progression I have seen at the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is truly phenomenal. Year after year, the race keeps improving in standards, organisation and global appeal,” he noted.

Persecondnews reports that anticipation is high for the 2026 race, which is poised to draw top-tier competitors from around the globe, solidifying its position among Africa’s premier road-running competitions.
