As Nigeria prepares to bid farewell to a defensive icon, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced plans for a grand testimonial to honour William Troost-Ekong following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The 32-year-old former Super Eagles captain officially stepped away from international duties on December 4, 2025.
His retirement marks the end of a storied career defined by leadership and a lasting legacy of success on the continental stage.
With 83 caps and three medals, Troost-Ekong’s contributions to Nigerian football will be etched in history forever.
During his illustrious career, Troost-Ekong led Nigeria to the 2023 AFCON final, earning the Most Valuable Player award and setting a record for most goals scored by a defender in the tournament’s history.
His leadership and commitment inspired a generation of Nigerian footballers.
In an exclusive interview with Persecondnews in Abuja, NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi lauded Troost-Ekong’s unwavering commitment.
He noted that the NFF, the National Sports Commission (NSC), and the fans deeply value his contributions, expressing profound gratitude for the sacrifices the defender made throughout his tenure with the national team.
“His contribution to our football is greatly appreciated by the NFF, the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the fans, and we want to thank him for all his sacrifice for the national team.
“Our focus now is on the African Cup of Nations in Morocco, and when we return, we will sit down and see what we will do concerning his retirement plan or testimonial,” he said.
Following the conferment on him as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), William Troost-Ekong reflected on his journey, describing Nigeria as the foundation of his identity and the catalyst for achieving his greatest footballing dreams.
In a heartfelt post on X, the former captain extended his sincere appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the prestigious national honour.
Troost-Ekong expressed his immense pride in receiving the award, which serves as a formal recognition of his significant impact on Nigerian sports.
He further noted that being honoured by the nation for a second time has deepened his connection to the country, emphasizing the profound sense of duty and responsibility that defines representing the green and white.
“Nigeria gave me my identity, my purpose, and the platform to live my dream through football,” he said.
He further shared that donning the Super Eagles’ iconic green and white jersey was more than just a career milestone; it was a sacred privilege.
