Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) to remain steadfast in their mission, assuring them that the party’s challenges are “not beyond repair.”
Obasanjo delivered this message during a visit by the PDP NWC to his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday.
According to a statement shared on the PDP’s official X page, the former President praised the current leadership’s efforts to stabilize and reposition the party.
He commended the NWC’s steps and emphasized the need to instill strict discipline, stating firmly that “anybody who wants to belong to a political party must adhere strictly to its rules and regulations.”
“Things are not beyond repair. Soldier on…You are doing very well,” Chief Obasanjo stated, encouraging the committee to continue their work with diligence and tact.”
Obasanjo used the visit to underscore the vital role of a strong and focused opposition in a democracy, charging the NWC to ensure that national interest remains paramount in all their actions.
He emphasized that the current challenges facing the nation demand that all political actors prioritize the country’s well-being and play constructive roles.
Obasanjo, however, did not shy away from criticism, stating pointedly that the Federal Government’s current trajectory “can’t take Nigeria anywhere good.”
While offering his wealth of experience and political insights, Obasanjo affirmed his readiness to provide guidance to the party’s leadership when necessary.
Responding to the former President’s encouraging words, the PDP National Chairman Turaki expressed profound gratitude on behalf of the entire NWC.
“Your continued support and wisdom mean a great deal to us, Sir. Your advice and great counsel are always very helpful, and we will rely on them as we work tirelessly to rebuild and unify our party.
“We came here specifically to tap into your experience and benefit from your invaluable perspective on both the party’s future and the state of our nation,” he said.
