President Bola Tinubu has approved the constitution of Nigeria’s delegation to the US-Nigeria joint working group, aimed at strengthening security collaboration between the two countries.
The move is part of efforts to address the country’s pressing security challenges.
“The composition of the Joint Working Group was part of the agreement reached during the recent trip to Washington, DC, by a high-level Nigerian delegation led by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu,” said Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy in a statement on Thursday.
Ribadu will lead the multi-stakeholder team, which includes key government officials such as Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Defence Mohammed Abubakar, and Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, among others.
“I urge members of the Joint Working Group to work assiduously with their US counterparts to ensure the smooth operationalisation of all agreements across sectors,” Tinubu stated.
The joint working group is expected to enhance intelligence sharing, strategic planning, counter-terrorism initiatives, and military cooperation, ultimately bolstering Nigeria’s internal security environment.
Idayat Hassan from the office of the NSA and Paul Alabi of the Nigerian Embassy in the US will serve as the secretariat.
