FCT Minister’s Security Drive: 12 Police Stations 90% Complete

334

To combat the surge in kidnappings and killings that plagued the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) between late 2023 and early 2024, the FCT Administration says it is strengthening community security by completing 12 new police stations.

This initiative directly addresses the sustained insecurity where communities in Abaji, Kwali, and Bwari suffered repeated abductions and bandit incursions.

The development fulfills FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s pledge to decentralize policing and bring safety closer to the grassroots.

During an inspection tour on Thursday, October 30, Adamu Gwary, Director of the FCT Department of Security Services, confirmed that 11 of the 12 police stations across the six Area Councils have reached over 90% completion.

“The new police stations in rural areas will undoubtedly boost residents’ morale and confidence, aligning with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike’s vision of strengthening the security system,” Gwary said.

He explained that each of the stations is designed to include officers’ quarters of six two-bedroom flats to ensure adequate accommodation for personnel and enhance operational efficiency.

“These facilities will bring security closer to the people. With personnel stationed nearby, response times will improve, and police can effectively handle emergencies,” the Director said.

Gwary further disclosed that fitting and finishing works were ongoing at most sites, assuring that the projects would soon be ready for commissioning.

The police station project, which officially began in September 2024 after approval by the FCT Executive Committee, was conceived to curb rising incidents of kidnapping and other violent crimes while restoring public confidence in the security system.

Some of the project sites visited include Bako and Giri in Gwagwalada Area Council; Yaba in Abaji Area Council; Ushafa in Bwari Area Council; Saburi and Takushara in Abuja Municipal Area Council.

At the Saburi site, one of the contractors, Ahmed Yahaya, pledged commitment to delivering the project within the stipulated timeframe.

“We are on track and committed to completing this project as scheduled. Our goal is to ensure that the facility is ready for use to support security efforts in the FCT.”

Gwary assured that the Wike-led FCT Administration would continue to prioritize safety and security infrastructure to make Abuja a model of community-based policing and a safer capital for all.
