Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic may have hit a snag, with defender Felix Agu’s participation in doubt due to an injury.
Agu, who plays for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, sustained the injury during the club’s 1-0 victory over St. Pauli on Saturday.
He was replaced by Isaac Schmidt in the 45th minute, raising concerns about his availability for the upcoming qualifiers.
Agu, 26, was named in Nigeria’s 23-man squad for the qualifiers by head coach Eric Chelle on Friday.
However, his fitness is now a major concern.
Although he made his first appearance for the Super Eagles in the Unity Cup final against Jamaica in May, Agu is yet to feature in a competitive game for the team.
His absence would be a significant blow to Nigeria’s defensive lineup.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Agu’s fitness, the Super Eagles are set to begin preparations for the qualifiers on Monday.
Nigeria will face Lesotho at the New Peter Makoba Stadium in Polokwane City on October 10, before hosting Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom capital, four days later.
