Gunmen ambushed a team of security personnel on Friday, killing eight officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The attack occurred around 10 p.m. at the entrance of the BUA Cement Company in Okpella as the officers were escorting five Chinese expatriates back to their base after a routine patrol.
Persecondnews gathered that during the ambush, the attackers, armed with sophisticated weapons, opened fire on the convoy.
In addition to the eight NSCDC operatives, one civilian was also killed.
Four other NSCDC officers were injured and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Thanks to the swift response of the Corps, four of the five Chinese expatriates were rescued unharmed.
The fifth expatriate was reportedly abducted.
The NSCDC State Commandant, Gbenga Agun, has since visited both the scene of the incident and the injured officers in the hospital.
When reached for comment, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer in Edo, Efosa Ogbebor, declined to speak, saying a formal statement would be released by the Corps’ national headquarters.
