Rwanda’s Amavubi Arrive in Uyo for Crucial World Cup Qualifier

2.4k

The Rwanda national football team, Amavubi, has touched down in Uyo, Akwa Ibom capita, ahead of their highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Super Eagles.

Led by coach Adel Amrouche, the team landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday night and took a connecting flight to Uyo.

The contingent comprised 20 players, technical crew members, and officials of the Rwanda Football Association.

The Amavubi are set to hold their first training session at the practice pitch of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, under the floodlights on Wednesday.

This crucial training session will likely be a key factor in their preparations for the match against Nigeria.

Four players – Phanuel Kavita, Bonheur Mugisha, Jojea Kwizera, and Clement Buhake – are expected to join the team in Uyo, bolstering the squad’s chances.

Rwanda currently occupies the second position in Group C, having accumulated eight points from six games.

Their upcoming match against Nigeria, scheduled for Saturday, promises to be an intense encounter.

The Amavubi will aim to capitalize on their current form and make a strong impression against the Super Eagles.

Persecondnews recalls that in November 2024 Nigeria rounded off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series with a shock 2-1 defeat to Rwanda.

The Super Eagles came into the game already qualified for next year’s tournament as Group D winners.

It was the three-time African champions who took the lead in the 59th minute through a fine solo goal from Samuel Chukwueze.

But the Rwandans replied with two quick goals from Ange Mutsinzi and Innocent Nshuti to claim their first ever win over Nigeria.
