A strong security presence has been deployed across Rivers State for the ongoing local government elections.
Residents are turning out to cast their votes in the polls, which are being held in all 23 local government areas, 319 wards, and 6,866 polling units.
Persecondnews reports that these elections are taking place six months after the Supreme Court nullified the previous council polls from October 2024.
In a show of force aimed at reassuring the public, security agencies were highly visible in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor on Friday, August 29, the day before the election.
The security convoy was a joint effort, including personnel from the Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Army, Navy, NSCDC, FRSC, and other related agencies.
“We have put adequate arrangements in place to secure lives and property before, during, and after the elections.
“Our personnel and logistics deployment will ensure a free, safe, and credible exercise,” Rivers Police Commissioner Olugbenga Adepoju said.
The RSIEC Chairman, Michael Odey, also urged voters to come out peacefully, promising the timely arrival of election materials even in riverine communities.
“With the cooperation of the police and sister agencies, adequate security has been guaranteed,” Odey said in a broadcast Friday night.
Restriction of movement is in force from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. to prevent disruptions.
Due to a political crisis that led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy in March 2025, the local government elections are being conducted under an emergency rule.
Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas is currently serving as the sole administrator.
Political analysts believe the results of today’s polls will significantly influence Rivers State’s political landscape, especially with the 2027 governorship election on the horizon.
As of this time of report, voting is underway in several polling units, with a noticeable security presence in and around sensitive locations.
