Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has signaled that the 2027 presidential election will likely be his final bid for the nation’s top office, citing both the high stakes and his advancing age.

Speaking during an interview with Arise Television on Wednesday evening, the 2023 PDP presidential candidate acknowledged that by the time the next election cycle arrives, he will be 80 years old.

When asked if his age would raise the pressure of the campaign, Atiku was definitive.

“Certainly yes, because the stakes are higher and I believe that will be my last outing,” he remarked.

This declaration marks a potential closing chapter for Atiku, who has been a perennial fixture in Nigerian presidential politics since 2003.

Persecondnews recalls that Atiku’s political journey is a storied one, beginning in 1993 when he first vied for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ticket before yielding to the late Chief MKO Abiola.

Since then, he has been a mainstay on the ballot: running under the Action Congress in 2007 against Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, challenging Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, and later representing the PDP in high-stakes battles against Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 and Bola Tinubu in 2023.

Throughout his career, the former Vice President has championed a platform of restructuring, economic liberalization, and private sector-led development.

As political maneuvering for 2027 begins to intensify, Atiku’s admission that he is entering his final act adds a significant layer of intrigue to the unfolding race for the presidency.
