The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, has upgraded the Nigeria Police Force’s Legal Section to the Directorate of Legal Services as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and improving operational efficiency.

In a statement on Tuesday, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, noted that the Directorate will serve as the apex legal arm of the Force, overseeing legal services, training, policy review, and engagement with prosecutorial bodies, the judiciary, and other justice sector stakeholders.

“This move is designed to give the Force’s legal operations a stronger institutional identity and recognition both locally and internationally,” he said.

By consolidating its legal structures under a directorate framework, the Force aims to improve its prosecutorial prowess to meet international best policing standards.

Assistant Inspector-General Ohiozoba O. Ehiede has been appointed as the pioneer Director of the Directorate of Legal Services.

AIG Ehiede brings a wealth of experience, proven leadership, and a distinguished record of service, which are expected to drive the Directorate’s mandate with excellence.

Adejobi said the IG believed that the upgrade reflects the Nigeria Police Force’s renewed commitment to aligning its operations with global law enforcement standards and ensuring that legal processes within the Force meet the highest levels of professionalism, transparency, and efficiency.

“This development is expected to enhance the Nigeria Police Force’s ability to deliver justice and maintain law and order.

“With a dedicated Directorate of Legal Services, the Force can improve its prosecutorial success rates and public confidence in police operations,” it added.
