Femi Adesina, former presidential spokesperson, has made a stark revelation about Nigeria’s healthcare system, saying that former President Muhammadu Buhari could have died long ago if he had been treated in Nigeria.

Speaking to Channels Television on the sidelines of coverage of Buhari’s burial on Tuesday monitored by Persecondnews, Adesina said Buhari’s decision to seek medical treatment abroad was a matter of life and death.

“If he had said ‘I will do my medicals in Nigeria’ just as a show off or something, he could have long been dead because there may not be the expertise needed in the country,” Adesina said.

He noted that Buhari’s priority was to be alive to effect change in his country, adding, “You have to be alive to get certain things changed or corrected in your country.”

Adesina further disclosed that Buhari had been seeking medical treatment in the UK even before he became president.

“He always had his medicals in London even when he was not in office.”

Persecondnews recalls that during his eight-year tenure, Buhari spent at least 200 days in London for treatment abroad, sparking public outcry over foreign medical tourism among public officials.

Adesina’s comments have reignited the call for investment in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

While some argue that public officials should prioritize local healthcare, others believe that seeking medical treatment abroad is sometimes necessary.

“He needed to be alive to be able to lead the country to a point when we will have that expertise”.
