Just in: Police break up Abuja protesters with tear gas

Police operatives on Monday deployed tear gas to disperse protesters gathered in Abuja’s Maitama area, causing the crowd to scatter as the canisters exploded, filling the air with a noxious cloud.

The scene was one of chaos, with protesters coughing and covering their faces as they fled the area.

The use of tear gas marked an escalation in the standoff between the authorities and the demonstrators, who had assembled to voice their opposition to the Rivers State emergency rule.

Persecondnews reports that the nationwide protest, led by the Take-It-Back Movement and other civil society groups, commenced earlier in the day in the federal capital, aiming to raise awareness about pressing national issues and spark change.

Among the grounds of protest are the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act, the worsening economic hardship in the country, and the state of emergency in Rivers State.
