Oba Abimbola Owoade, the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, was coronated on Saturday, April 5, 2025, in a grand ceremony marked by pomp and traditional rites.
This coronation comes three months after he received the staff of office and instrument of appointment from Governor Seyi Makinde on January 13, 2025 at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
Persecondnews reports that Owoade succeeds the 45th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who joined his ancestors on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83.
The coronation event took place today (Saturday) at Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo, where Gov. Makinde led a host of dignitaries, including notable Nigerians.
Dignitaries at the coronation included the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi; Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Sefiu Olawale Oyebola, and Aare Oona Kankanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, among others.
The new monarch completed the compulsory 21-day traditional rites known as Oro Ipebi on Saturday, March 29.
Security arrangements have been significantly enhanced ahead of the ceremony.
