Liverpool secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday, restoring their 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
Diogo Jota scored the decisive goal in the 57th minute, securing the Reds’ 100th victory over the Toffees in all competitions.
The match was a highly competitive affair, with both teams creating scoring opportunities.
However, it was Liverpool who ultimately emerged victorious, thanks to Jota’s neat finish.
“Our boys showed immense character, I think we created more than in the away game, and in the end, we scored a good goal and kept a clean sheet,” Liverpool coach Arne Slot said.
Everton, on the other hand, were left to rue their missed opportunities, particularly in the first half when Beto struck the woodwork.
“I think we are a lot closer to them tonight than possibly when I came to the club than what I expected. Tonight was really tight. An offside goal which they get and that’s the difference in the game tonight,” Everton Coach David Moyes said.
The win marks a welcome return to form for Liverpool, who had suffered a setback in their treble hopes with defeats to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final.
Next up for Liverpool is a trip to Fulham on Sunday, while Everton faces a tough test against Arsenal at Goodison Park.
