African football legends have come out to condemn former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher’s disparaging remarks about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Nigerian football legend, Jay-Jay Okocha, has joined the chorus of criticism, saying Carragher “can never appreciate African football or the talents that come from Africa.”
Okocha’s comments came in response to Carragher’s suggestion that AFCON is not a major tournament, a statement that has sparked widespread outrage across the continent.
Okocha’s sentiments were echoed by former Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, who described Carragher’s words as “disrespectful”.
Mikel, who won the 2013 AFCON title with Nigeria, noted the tournament’s significance in inspiring young African footballers.
“Children, kids grow up watching their idols put in everything in supporting their country… The future generation influx of African players coming into the Premier League, coming to Europe to play, it’s all because they grew up watching the African Cup of Nations,” Mikel said.
Carragher’s remarks were made during a Sky Sports post-match discussion, where he questioned Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or due to his inability to win “major tournaments”.
However, his comments were swiftly challenged by fellow pundits Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge, who reminded him of AFCON’s importance.
The incident has sparked a heated debate about the respect and recognition accorded to African football.
The controversy has sparked widespread outrage, with African football fans and legendary players joining forces to unanimously denounce Carragher’s comments.
Okocha’s parting shot summed up the mood: “I mean, you wouldn’t want your son to be like Carragher.”
