NNPCL Announces Groundbreaking for Five Mini LNG Plants in Ajaokuta, Major Milestone in Nigeria’s Energy Development

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has announced a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of five mini liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

The ceremony, tagged “From Gas to Prosperity: Catalysing Nigeria’s Economic Growth,” is scheduled to take place on Thursday (January 30).

This development marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to promote cleaner energy alternatives and reduce carbon emissions.

Persecondnews reports that in November 2021, Nigeria passed the Climate Change Act that seeks to achieve low greenhouse gas emissions, green and sustainable growth by providing the framework to set a target to reach net zero between 2050 and 2070.

According to Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content, this remarkable development will reduce carbon emissions, and enhance energy security across our nation.

She commended the NNPCL for its forward-thinking approach in driving this transformative initiative.

Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPCL, had hinted at the company’s plans to build new mini LNG plants in Nigeria during a conference in November 2024.

Although he did not disclose the location of the plants at the time, Akpoti-Uduaghan later revealed that the five mini LNG plants would be sited in Ajaokuta.

The NNPCL has partnered with several companies, including PRIME LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete, to execute the project.

Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed satisfaction with the local participation and inclusion of indigenous expertise in the project, noting that it aligns with the goals of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act (2010).

The construction of the mini LNG plants is expected to create employment opportunities, stimulate industrial development, and ensure access to cleaner and more affordable energy for households, businesses, and industries.
