Manchester United has confirmed the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the club’s new manager, replacing Erik ten Hag.

The 39-year-old Portuguese tactician has signed a two-and-a-half year deal, with an option for a further 12-month extension.

Amorim joins United from Sporting Lisbon, where he won back-to-back titles and ended the club’s 19-year title drought.

The Red Devils paid £8.3m to activate his release clause, plus an additional £1m to secure an early departure.

United’s swift and quiet approach secured Amorim’s services, with chief executive Omar Berrada jetting to Lisbon on Monday to finalize the deal.

The club’s statement reads: Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements.

“He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday, 11 November.

“Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP, the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Ruben joins.”

The club prioritized allowing Amorim a dignified exit and Sporting sufficient time to find a replacement.

Caretaker boss Ruud van Nistelrooy will oversee the next three matches against Chelsea, Leicester City, and PAOK before Amorim takes charge for the November 24 fixture against Ipswich Town.

Amorim’s appointment is seen as a significant coup for United, who believe his proven track record, style of football, and ability to develop young talent make him an ideal fit.
