Breaking: Osimhen breaks 24-year jinx, Oshoala delivers powerful speech on winning 6th CAF award

Nigeria won big at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) awards in Morocco with Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala breaking records.

After 29 years, Osimhen became the first Nigerian to win CAF’s Men Player of the Year award.

The outstanding Super Eagles goal machine edged Achraf Hakimi of Morocco and Mohammed Salah of Egypt to clinch the award.

The last Nigerian to win the coveted award was Kanu Nwankwo in 1999.

In his speech, Osimhen thanked the assistant coach of the Super Eagles, Emmanuel Amuneke, for guiding him through early stages of his career.

He said: “First of all, I want to say thank you God for everything, special thanks go to Mr. Emmanuel Amuneke, without him I don’t think I will be standing in front of you guys, holding one of the most prestigious awards in world football.

“It’s a dream come through for me, I want to thank everyone that has supported me in achieving my dreams.”

Last season, his superiority was clear for all to see, he was too powerful and mentally strong that he became unstoppable smashing every possible record available in Italy and powered his Napoli side to their first league title in 33 years.

Osimhen became the first African player in the 125-year history of the Italian top flight to win the Seria A golden boot.

The absolute goal machine in the 2022/2023 season broke the record for the most Seria A goals scored by an African player in a single season with 26 goals in Seria A.

In the AFCON 2023 qualifiers, he emerged as the highest goal scorer with his 10 goals helping Super Eagles qualify for the Nation’s Cup which will be played in January 2024.

The Lagos-born striker defeated Sadio Mane of Senegal, and Salah to clinch the award.

Asisat Oshoala after wining her record breaking six CAF Women Player of the Year award, called for an African football alliance which will be aimed at dominating the global football stage.

“I implore all the federation heads in Africa to come together. Let us build our continent, it’s very possible.

“The last FIFA’s Men World Cup, we shocked the world, Women’s World Cup in Australia Africa made history with the teams from the continent qualifying for the next round.

“I know before the  FIFA World Cup we can get better and win it for sure. Africa needs to come together as a unit.”
