The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a warning to some states about the rising water levels of the River Niger and floodwaters as of August 22, 2024.
The agency advised states and communities along the River Niger system to take necessary precautions, as floodwaters are forecasted to reach their highest levels towards the end of August and into September.
The warning comes after a report from the Niger Basin Authority in Niamey, Niger Republic, which indicated the impact of upstream activities in Niger and Mali on rising water levels.
A statement on Friday, signed by the Director General of NIHSA, Arch. Umar Mohammed, said: “Flood waters from these two countries are expected to move gradually into Nigeria through Kebbi State.”
The statement also said that the dam operators at Kainji and Jebba, on the River Niger, have received notification and are prepared to handle the situation.
Mohamed said: “It is important to note that, as of August 22, 2024, the dams are not spilling water from their reservoirs.”
The agency assured all that it will continue to monitor the flood situation in the country and provide periodic updates to the public.
