Nigeria proudly secured two silver medals at the 2024 Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO), held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Two talented students, Elvis Chiedozie Ekwelem from Rivers State and Oghenerukevwe Patrick Esemitodje from Lagos State, won the medals.
The duo showcased their exceptional mathematical skills in the prestigious annual competition.
The competition brought together young African students from over 20 countries across the continent.
Prof. Zeblon Vilakazi, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Witwatersrand and host of the event, praised Nigerian students for their outstanding intellectual rigor, commitment, and talent.
He emphasized that the competition seeks to foster and celebrate academic excellence and research among Africa’s brightest young mathematical minds, promoting a culture of intellectual curiosity and achievement.
Vilakazi explained that this year’s Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) had 20 countries in attendance, with eight (8) others participating virtually.
The outstanding achievements of the Nigerian students, Vilakazi said, are a testament to their profound understanding and mastery of mathematics.
Their remarkable performance demonstrates a strong desire, enthusiasm, and dedication to excel in the field, not just at the national level but also on the continental stage.
This, he noted, positions them as promising talents who will drive the future growth and advancement of mathematics.
