Ahead of the announcement of a new minimum wage by the Federal Government, Edo Gov. Godwin Obaseki, has increased the minimum wage for state workers from N40,000 to N70,000.

The governor announced this on Monday at the inauguration of the newly built ultra-modern Labour House secretariat complex for state labour unions along Temboga Road, Ikpoba-Hill, Benin City.

According to the governor, the new wage comes into effect on May 1st, 2024.

This latest development from the Edo government is coming as organized labour demanded N615,000 as the new minimum wage for workers to cope with the economic realities and high cost of living in Nigeria.

The labour unions said the current minimum wage of N30,000 can no longer cater for the wellbeing of an average Nigerian worker.

They also lamented that not all governors are paying the current wage award, which will expire by April, five years after the Minimum Wage Act of 2019 was signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Act is to be reviewed every five years to meet the contemporary economic demands of workers.
